Exploring VP/vP Preposing in Multiple Nominative Constructions

چکیده
This study investigates VP/vP preposing within the context of Multiple Nominative Constructions (MNCs). In Korean, a verbal constituent can be moved to sentence-initial position. However, when an unbound trace is contained preposed constituent, it violates Proper Binding Condition (PBC), rendering sentence ungrammatical. The PBC effect has non-trivial implications for structure VP/vP. paper across diverse categories MNCs in Korean illuminate their structural characteristics. occur various environments, broadly classified into Major Subject constructions and Object (Kuno 1973). Previous literature classifies two types several sub-types. An important question concerned with MNCs. explores whether previous analyses adequately explain (im)possibility each sub-type We show that results from unique structure, combination many other syntactic principles.

Double nominative constructions in Korean*
This paper considers the notorious Double Nominative Constructions (DNCs) found in Korean, and argues that these constructions are derived from a locative construction. Based on Freeze (1992) and Perlmutter (1978), I will show that the derivation in Korean DNCs is the same as that found in English possessive, existential and locative sentences (see Fillmore (1968), Kuno (1971) and Lyons (1967) ...
متن کاملMultiple Nominative Constructions in Japanese and Their Theoretical Implications
This paper studies the derivation of multiple nominative constructions (MNC) in Japanese. First, discussing the MNC-sentences in which there is a relation of inalienable possession between nominative noun phrases, I will argue that the set of local economy principles that choose among potentially possible steps at a single stage of a derivation contains a principle that minimizes the size of mo...
متن کاملJapanese Multiple Nominative Constructions: The View of Antisymmetry
This paper focuses on multiple nominative constructions (MNCs) in Japanese, pursuing the question of how nominative ga-marked phrases are syntactically licensed. MNCs in Japanese, in which more than one gamarked phrase can occur within a clause, have widely been studied by a number of linguists (e.g. Fukui, 1986; Heycock, 1993; Kuno, 1973; Takezawa, 1987; Tateshi, 1994; Vermeulen, 2005; Whitman...
متن کاملNominative-marked Phrases in Japanese Tough Constructions
In this paper we conduct a detailed examination of the tough construction in Japanese with the main focus on some types of nominative case particles ga. They are correlated with the difference not only in the nominativegenitive case alternation but also in the semantic or pragmatic interpretation. Based on these data, we discuss the categories of the nominative case particles and derivations fo...
متن کاملLicensing Nominals in the Multiple Nominative Constructions in Korean: A Mereological Perspective
This paper investigates some important constraints on the licensing of nominals in the so-called Multiple Nominative Constructions (MNCs) in Korean from a mereological point of view, proposing a semantic relation hierarchy. The main idea advanced in this paper is that MNCs are cyclically formed only when the relationship between the two consecutive NPs satisfies one of the conceptual constraint...
